Makeup Bag Must-Haves

Hey – go get your makeup bag and dump it out on the table. Now, raise your hand if you haven’t purchased new eye shadow in over a year.  *slowly raises hand*

We teamed up with one of our favorite makeup artists, Kristin Gray, who has worked with the likes of MAC Cosmetics and Yves Saint Laurent, to make sure your makeup bag is ready for the new year. Plus… find out what you CANNOT go another day without. Kelsey of The Malicotes snapped some shots for you so all you have to do is walk into Nordstrom, hand over your phone and tell ’em to round it all up. Or just click on the links below and the’ll pop up to be added to your Nordies shopping cart!

1. ABH (Anastasia Beverly Hills) “Modern Renaissance” Palette
Perfect blend of SUPER pigmented matte, satin and shimmer eye shadows that work well on every skin tone to create year round looks for any occasion/season . I LOVE the “romantic” vibe of the warmer red, orange, sienna color scheme of this palette. Also includes 4 transitional crease shadows which is way more than most palettes!
Price – $42.00

2. BECCA Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in “champagne pop” also known as a highlighting powder.

I live for highlight, I die for highlight, the reason I do makeup is for the tingle I get inside when the perfect highlight is dusted across the skin creating a god like beam of light from the face whilst in the sun. The more mannequin-esque my skin looks, the better! And BECCA is the HIGHLIGHT GODDESS! Her powders are so buttery and pigmented and all of them give an “opalescent” sheen opposed to a glittery highlight like most other brands offer. This particular powder works best on lighter complexions because it is a bit iridescent, but a great mixable highlighting powder and doubles as an eyeshadow/tear duct highlight. Plus the packaging… I mean…
Price – $38.00

3.  YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) Touche Éclat Highlighting Pen

This is an awesome versatile highlighting pen. It’s super creamy and lightweight so you can use it under the eyes to brighten (8 hours of sleep in the click of a pen (budum CHING) on the lids as a shadow primer, around the lips to make them appear fuller, basically anywhere. Won’t ever cake up, natural finish to give that bright, light, “awake” look without ever appearing thick on the skin (cakey.) Super buildable as well! Perfect for mature skin or anyone with fine lines that still wants a natural under eye concealer/highlight. Available in all shades for every skin tone!
Price – $42.00

4. MAC Cosmetics Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara

This is probably the most “slept on” product here. Everyone has their go-to mascara, but this one works well with others and is a little boss on its own. Very dark black color with a smaller-than-most wand, which is great for separating and defining lashes. This product is literally incapable of clumping and super buildable so you can achieve your perfect lash and even bring it with you to touch up with, which you can’t do with most mascaras!
Price – $18.00

5. MAC Cosmetics Fast Response Eye Cream

I really hate giving away secrets, but with these braided brows and weird makeup trends lately, I feel obligated as a makeup artist. This eye cream has caffeine in it and feels silicone based which is super nice first thing in the morning under the eyes to de-puff bags for those sleepless nights. The dual usage leads me to the secret about this stuff. Ever had uneven winged liner? Ever had uneven TOP liner and you end up looking like Amy Winehouse when you were going for Katy Perry? Look no more! This eye cream doubles as a makeup remover/corrector that does NOT leave behind patchy spots and doesn’t ever cause you to start over. If you’ve done a complete eye look and need to fix your liner or have a black mascara spot on your eyelid/shadow, take a Q-tip and a tiny bit of this and wa-la! The mess up is gone and your makeup is easily able to be reapplied or blended back out seamlessly as it was. Just try and thank me later.
Price – $32.00

6. YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) Tint-In-Balm

If you’re addicted to chapstick as am I but want a little color along with moisture or maybe aren’t necessarily ready to take the plunge to a bold matte wine lip, but are sick of your Burt’s Bees, this beauty is for you! This product combines lip balm with a glowy, sheer color that will amplify your natural lip color. Perfect to whip out (to show off that bomb component if nothing else) for a quick fix for dry lips + a sheer wash of color. Comes in a nice shade range from mocha colors to pinks to reds. Plus each tube has a set of lips imprinted in the top of the actual lipstick! It also smells and tastes AH-MAZING! YSL are leaders in the lip product industry, so why wouldn’t you trust them? That’s what I thought.
Price – $34.00

7. MAC Cosmetics Studio Face & Body Foundation

Awesome super lightweight, foundation with a dewy finish. Also buildable and great to mix with other fuller coverage products on those days you ain’t feelin’ yo face, but also great alone when you are feelin’ yo face. Will even out skintone with the most beautiful dewy glow. Great for dry skin. Easy to control the amount as it comes in a squeezy bottle with a drop applicator.
Price – $29.00

8. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting PowderThis is definitely a staple in my kit and day to day life! I mean it’s award-winning and rightfully so. It’s a loose silky powder with a touch of sheer coverage to set your makeup for lasting wear available in 2 shades. Perfect to set under eye concealer alone or your entire face to absorb oil or moisture all day long. Super lightweight so again…never cakey!  A must for anytime you’ll be in front of a camera as it’s “no-flashback” formula means you’ll look great in photos, and it creates a soft-focus effect to subtly blur the look of fine lines and imperfections.
Price – $38.00

9. Laura Mercier Brow Pencil

Love this brow pencil, it’s not too creamy or too dry like some other pencils. Comes with a spooly brush on the end and lasts forever. I love the “Blonde” color because its more on the ashy/taupey side which looks great and natural on everyone. Available in 8 shades if taupe isn’t your thang.
Price – $24.00

10. NYX Two Timer Dual Ended Eyeliner

Recently discovered this guy and I love, love him. I’m a stickler on liners because the felt tip pens i’ve worked with are either too thick, dry out too easily, streak over shadow, or all of the above. This guy? None of those PLUS is dual sided with a creamy twist up kohl liner on one side and the perfect felt tip liner on the other! Oh, and it’s $9.99!! like what? Less is more people.
Price – $10.00

11. MAC 221 Mini Tapered Blending Brush
My favorite eye brush for sure. I was super stoked the day this came out because it was so needed in the industry! Perfect for anyone in general and especially those with smaller lids to really get in and blend shadow in crease area without it transferring above the crease and into the brow bone area where dark colors are forbidden. Its not too fluffy or too dense, which leaves you full control to beautifully diffuse those colors into the dreamy IG eye shadow gradient we all see, know and desire. Price – $25.00

12. MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush
This is similar to the 221 Brush listed below, but larger to cover more space. You must have a larger tapered brush like this in your eye shadow brush catalog if you ever want to achieve the art of seamless blended eye shadow! It can be doubled as an under eye concealer brush with the ability to get super close to the lash line as well. Overall it just blends anything damn good.
Price – $32.00

13. MAC 287 Duo Fibre Eyeshadow Brush
Sooo if you can see there’s an ongoing theme of two things here, “buildable” and “versatile” products are a constant on this list, and for good reason, this is why:

1- Products which enable you to “build” product, leave you in control of how much you want, need, or feel necessary for YOUR face on any given day or for any given look. By starting with less and choosing buildable products and tools, you can then learn at your own pace (we aren’t all pros, OK?) and soon achieve that natural glam look everyone wants.

2- Brushes and blending are KEY TO GOOD MAKEUP. Period. Use tools. Use tools for proper parts of your face and then blend. Blend blend and blend some more. You can never have too many tools and you can never blend too much! Plus, who wants to spread bacteria all over thy face? Thought so. So although this brush is named an “eyeshadow brush,” it is even more amazing for under eye concealer, it’s tapered duo fibres enable you to get really close to the lash line to blend that under eye product perfectly as well as buffing your product (concealer/highlighter) into the skin to achieve an airbrush finish. You can hold it flat or on it’s tip to utilize the white fibres for detail and makeup perfecting! You can also use this guy to pack on shadow on the lid with little to no fallout, which really conserves your product. Also conserves your wallet being this brush is a 2 for 1! *Cough Cough* -versatile- I am obsessed with this brush and you need it in your life.
Price – $32.00

MAC Brush Set – $147

14. CHANEL Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer is IT! *MY HOLY GRAIL*

It’s the best under eye concealer i’ve ever used and if it were a foundation I would use it all over my face. Under eye concealer/highlighter is the most drastic/awesome improvement to one’s face you can make. I can’t go a day without this guy..if I had to choose one thing if I were on a deserted island, aside from chapstick, it would be this. Super beautiful finish, gel based which means it blends amazingly without settling in fine lines. Medium-full coverage, a little bit goes a long way.
Price – $42.00

15. MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Highlighter

Yes, another highlighter/concealer situation. Sorry, they’re everything, i’ve tried them all and strategically placed 3 in this list of must haves. So this one here is kind of in between consistency of the Chanel Concealer and The YSL Touche Eclat pen, thus perfect to mix with either or use on its own. These are more so Color Correctors + under eye brighteners with only 4 shades available. A light yellow, light pink, honey apricot & deep apricot – all tones and undertones that are used to Color CORRECT. By that I mean, if you have dark circles, you may need to correct that with a lighter pink shade (Radiant Rose) to counteract the blue/violet undertones of dark circles, but you don’t want to look like a ghost with a light pink under eye. So, place this in the area needed, dab with a brush and be done, or mix with one of the other 2 suggested “skin toned” concealers mentioned around the rest of the under eye area and there you have the perfectly corrected, concealed and brightened under eye area. MIC Drop.
Price – $27.00

16. Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color in “Nude Rose”
This lightweight, yet bold lip color is considered a stain by me. It’s the perfect everyday color or Bridal color that literally works on EVERYONE. A lot of stains this day dry the heck out of your lips and are so full coverage they can scare you. Don’t get me wrong, that’s also great and I do love bold, but for everyday and for everyone, not so much..This color and formula is unmatched! The applicator is a larger sponge than most which covers more lip real estate that i’ve seen, and this color in particular is the most beautiful mauve-neutral i’ve ever seen. Leaves the lips nourished with a slight sheen and DOES NOT BUDGE! Buildable for the folks who want more color
Price – $28.00
