Is it too much to say we love this love story, because we do. Their photographer, Brandy Angel, gave us the full run down of their story and we’re sharing it all!
How They Met
Katy met Steve in the fall of 2010 in Columbia, SC. It was a college football Saturday and the two crossed paths at a bar near the stadium where they had both gone to watch the game with friends. Katy was visiting from Georgia and Steve had traveled from Pennsylvania. The two hit it off immediately and spent the whole game talking. Steve remembers thinking Katy had the most beautiful eyes and the biggest heart of any girl he’d ever met. Katy remembers how goofy Steve seemed trying to charm her. At the end of the game, Steve asked for Katy’s number with the hopes of meeting up that evening.
Despite the distance between them, they could feel themselves falling in love with each other’s sense of humor. Though they both agreed there was a special spark between them, timing and distance kept the couple apart. After a few starts and stops and many flights up and down the east coast, the couple finally found themselves together in the same city, in the summer of 2013 when Katy took a teaching job in Washington DC where Steve was already living. The couple quickly began building a life together.
The Proposal Story
Steve proposed to Katy on May 8th, 2015. in Arlington Ridge Park, overlooking the national monuments of Washington. It was a sunny Friday afternoon, and Katy came home from work to find a note on the kitchen table that led her to their favorite tree in the park. Steve and their yellow lab, Riggins, awaited under the tree with a picnic. After a meal of wine and pimento cheese, Steve asked Katy to take a selfie with him. Katy moved in close to take the photo, and Steve got down on one knee to ask her to marry him. Riggins rolled around in the grass next to them in approval.
Their Wedding Day
The wedding was held at the Marina Pavilion on Reynolds Plantation in Mid-April beside Lake Oconee, where Katy had spent many of her childhood summers. Steve, who spent his summers on a lake in Pennsylvania, had always wanted to get married by the water. Above all else, the couple wanted their wedding to be personal. They knew that if they included the people they loved in their wedding day that it would reflect the love they felt for each other and their guests.
The couple decided to have one of the bride’s closest friends perform the ceremony. She became ordained to marry them and inserted personal stories about the couple throughout the nuptials. One of the groomsmen sang and played the guitar for the couple’s first dance. The bride and groom wanted to share their day with the bride’s grandfather, who was celebrating his 89th birthday. Everyone in attendance sang to him as the couple brought him a birthday cake and candles. The day was personal and perfect, everything they could have dreamed it would be.
